This was written after an English Literature trip with my college to the war graves in Belgium and France, a trip I can honestly say for many reasons is among the more powerful and cherished memories of my life. Completely leaving aside that I have great memories of being with my friends and girlfriend-at-the-time on that trip, it was also an unforgettable experience seeing the rows and rows of shining white graves at each site ... I don't know if I've ever seen anything more heartbreakingly, tragically beautiful.
I started writing this before even getting home from the trip, and finished it a short while later. It's rather more a poem than a song really, but I'd imagine it could be set to music ... also there are sections of repeating backing vocals with two lines multitracked over the top of each otherwhich mark it out as being a song. I wanted to make a statement with the structure here, which is why it's a little odd: the first four line section is meant to suggest a single grave, then the next section is meant to represent the "camera" as it were panning outwards to show countless rows of graves. The next verse, with the four couplets, is supposed to suggest pairs of graves, seperate from the others, as they aren't all just in neat rows: some of them seem to be rather randomly located, and there are a number in pairs where comrades-in-arms were buried together.
There are a few references in this song too:
"Sacrificed to the fallacy that war can end war" is the inscription on the grave of a soldier named Arthur Conway Young
There's a line which refers to graves of unknown soldiers who couldn't be identified. This got me thinking, what if some people were wrongly identified, and hence buried under the wrong name? To me, that's quite a scary thought. So the next line references that.
The "ten thousand white teeth on a green hill" line is a reference to that riddle from The Hobbit: " Thirty white horses upon a red hill, Now they tramp, now they champ, now they stand still", where the answer is teeth. The rectangular white graves do look somewhat like teeth.
Comments, as always, are welcome and encouraged
A Cemetery - July - August 2004
Across a sea of green
A single white stone
Can often be seen
To float all alone
On each of the stones
A single red rose
Casts a shadow on the earth
Where those who slain
Have so long lain
And will until their rebirth
For they will rise again
Chorus:
Walking my path
Through the past
It seems the air might say
"We are those who will be set free
When we meet on Judgement Day"
Ten thousand white teeth on a green hill
What once was moving now stands still
Heroes' names are engraved on stone
While countless others remain unknown
A number lie under a different name
For in death, all wrecks look the same
A sacrifice to the fallacy that war can end war
The stand to attention forevermore
Chorus:
Walking my path
Through the past
It seems the air might say
"We are those who will be set free
When we meet on Judgement Day"
They will rise
Sacrificed to the fallacy that war can end war
They will rise
They stand to attention forevermore
They will rise
Chorus:
Walking my path
Through the past
It seems the air might say
"We are those who will be set free
When we meet on Judgement Day"
Chorus2:
Walking through their resting place
I heard the spirits say
"We are those who were released
When we fought on Judgement Day"
They will rise
Sacrificed to the fallacy that war can end war
They will rise
They stand to attention forevermore
They will rise

Spiritual
I wrote this song for my girlfriend at the time, for our 6 month anniversary ... I think she rather liked it, in fact if I remember rightly it made her a little teary. This is a love ballad but I don't think it's a typical one ... I think its good, I like the elemental theme, and in general I think it's more poetic and sophisticated than the other love songs I've written. In fact, I'd say this is my favourite of my love songs.
I've just rediscovered that when I posted it on the Internet originally, someone commented about the odd scientific metaphors, saying that "it's possibly the only rock song ever to contain the word "minerals". My very strange, slightly arrogant, and (in my opinion at least) rather fantastic reply was "Science, my friend, is the art of nature". Heh, not quite sure where I got that from!
I'd appreciate any comments, I'm beginning to feel as though I'm posting these just for myself ... if I am then that's fair enough, I'd still get a sense of accomplishment, but if anyone is reading this, it'd be nice for them to make themselves known.
Spiritual - February - July 2004
Together we two are a fuel
In which a dormant energy hides
A single spark all that’s needed
For this passion to ignite
And raise the flame that softly flickers
As though dancing in the breeze
To a music only heard by those
Who feel it in their dreams
A hypnotic glowing image is what I
See as slowly old ghosts burn
In one heated night the light of truth
Becomes aware of love’s return
In the torrent of the rapids
White waves crash upon the rocks
Wash away the noisy urgency
Of a thousand ticking clocks
Leaving a lake borne out of stillness
Like a faded memory
The waters seek to carry us
As we sail along life’s stream
And as the rain begins to fall
Into the mighty sea we’ll plunge
Diving into what it may bring
As if we two were one
Have you come to
Spirit me away?
Chorus:
While the golden fires burn
The wild waters will flow
As the rich Earth still turns
And a soothing wind blows
You remain the embodiment of my love
Because I feel that you are a spirit sent from above
I see a down-to-earth angel
With a flower in her hand
She holds the power to make hills
Rise up from out of dead sand
The old seed lives within the soil
New life lives deep in the seed
A symbiotic relationship
That fulfils all of our needs
As the plants absorb minerals
Which will let them bear fruit
Everything that you give me
Helps me break free of these roots
An element of surprise…
Entering into your world
Felt just like stepping into
A hurricane of your defences
Your own wind shield guarding you
Deep inside the maelstrom
The eye waits to feel the touch
Of the mortal man who is prepared
To stand the air’s last rush
This gale lifts us of our feet
And blows us far away from here
Like a surging gust of power
The strength of love becomes so clear
Have you come to
Spirit me away?
Chorus:
While the golden fires burn
The wild waters will flow
As the rich Earth still turns
And a soothing wind blows
You remain the embodiment of my love
Because I feel that you are a spirit sent from above
You’ve cast your compassion
In a spell around my heart
At the core of this Earth
The fire inside is beating
As the wind stings our faces
A watery tear leaves your eye
The feeling you radiate
Is what my whole world was needing
And you started to save it
The moment you fell from the sky
The element of surprise…
Chorus:
While the golden fires burn
The wild waters will flow
As the rich Earth still turns
And a soothing wind blows
You remain the embodiment of my love
Because I feel that you are a spirit sent from above
A spiritual being who has stolen my love

Turning Point
I wrote a little about this song in a previous entry, the one for the song Hold, although I've remembered some more things about the writing process which contradict what I wrote before :p
I believe I actually had the idea for the song on the day I broke up from college for Christmas in 2003, and it was on my way home I got the idea. It was pretty different then, but I think I got the idea for the chorus. Then on the night of Christmas Day (not New's Years Eve as I said before), after I'd probably had a little bit to drink, I started writing a poem based around the idea on the way home from the party I was at. As I said before, it was based around the fact that I was having trouble letting go of the past.
I put it on the backburner for a while, but eventually managed to turn the poem into a song about six months later. I tried to be quite experimental with it, writing a poem with quite a loose structure and then turning it into a song, and I'm not sure it turned out completely right; some of the parts are lacking in rhythm a bit, and the anthemic chorus sits a bit oddly with the introspective bulk of the song. But I feel it's got some pretty powerful imagery, and I got a couple of decent reviews for it.
Comments are welcome, as always.
Turning Point - December 2003 - July 2004
Spoken: I am not trying to escape my past ...
The storm still rages over
The place I've just left
Its power of destruction
Still fresh in my head
It will haunt me forever
Never let me forget
How the clouds would pour down
Their memories and regrets
Ahead lies an unspoiled plain
The sun reflecting off morning dew
A single step foward
And no more
Is all I can do
Before I'm pulled back again
Unbidden, the images flash through
Destroying the dam that
Holds back the flood
Again, the tides was the
Sunlit canvas
In their murky colours
Spoken: I am not trying to escape my past. Just the hold it has over my future.
Something still holds me
The only choice is to
Escape the rain
Spoken: This is my attempt to make peace with what happened...
The city still has me
In her icy embrace
Wordless, still tries to
Plant a kiss on my face
Now I've had far too much
Only needed a taste
But I kept wanting more
Until she took it away
With my brush I paint
A wonderful new life
It's just ahead
But I remain scared
And the night
Swallows it up again
Just grant me my own chance
And I will make a world
Where it shines, though still rains
And from this new things grow
A garden imperfect
A design of our own
Spoken: This is my attempt to make peace with what happened. And to recognize that circumstances are different now.
Last year I was trapped by myself
This time my fate's down to me
And I will break free
Spoken: Have I....?
Chorus:
No more pain! No more fears!
No more rain! No more tears!
Today is the point on which my life will change
I will break free and I must
Escape the rain!
This is the point
On which my whole life will turn
The scales are balanced today
Time has stopped in the here and now
But it can't stay that way
If I look back then I am lost
And as they tip I pray
That I can find the strength
To move them to a new place
And that I don't slide back into the...
Spoken: Have I broken free?
Chorus:
No more pain! No more fears!
No more rain! No more tears!
Today is the point on which my life will change
I will break free and I must
Escape the rain!
Escape the rain!

Thermal
There's not a huge amount of a story behind this one ... I remember I was on a bus, on the way home from my girlfriend-at-the-time's house ... I was listening to Van Halen on my CD player, I was looking at the sky ... and somehow I got the idea for this. I wrote it very quickly, which is why it is a bit rough in places
The idea of a hawk riding a thermal most likely comes from the Animorphs book series; one of the main characters is trapped as a hawk (and if that makes little sense ... read the books!), and his narration constantly refers to thermals: updrafts of hot air that rise of metal and buildings and things when they heat up. You know if you see a bird with it's wings spread, not flapping them but rising really quickly nonetheless? It's probably riding a thermal.
Incidentally, my girlfriend at the time had the chorus of this song as her signature on a messageboard she posted on ... even for a bit after we split up. Which was nice.
Thermal - May 2004
I find liberation
In the eyes of the free
Suddenly I know why I believe
In ghosts, in fairies, in God, in love,
In soul
A type of salvation
That rustles the leaves
Then fills my sky with holes
Chorus:
With a wingspan of time
It's hungry for prey
It catches a thermal
And soars away
The release of a feeling amazes me
Into the air, borne from the sea
A bittersweet feeling that's taken away
Far too soon
Tomorrow we'll lie in til twelve
And run away in the the afternoon
Chorus:
With a wingspan of time
It's hungry for prey
It catches a thermal
And soars away
And the higher it reaches,
The higher we'll reach
And the higher we'll be when it falls
So I pray in the morning
For success through the night
I prepare my self, in case
There's a need to fight
And it climbs ever higher
Until it's drowned in the light
Laughing and mocking our lives
Knowing that one day we'll fly
Chorus:
With a wingspan of time
It's hungry for prey
It catches a thermal
And soars away
And it reaches the heavens
But doesn't stop there
As the sun rises in the sky
It keeps on flying
Past the end of time

Remaining 3 DC songs
I'm getting bored of posting the DC songs, so I'm just going to put all the rest of the ones that haven't gone missing in this one thread. There's only 3 of them, and I only have a definete writing credit in one of them ... again though I can't remember which parts I wrote specifically.
Back to my lyrics next post!
Straight Out Of Dry County - Credited just to DC, I don't think I wrote on it though - March 2004
Pacing this rented room
That should've been my home
Waiting for the sun to set
On everything I've known
Waiting for the stars
That'll light my way
Part of me is straining to run
And part of me wants to stay
I don't know when I decided
This place was slowly killing me
Taking my life away, one day at a time
How could I have been so blind
Now I see
For so long
I was just like everyone else
Unknowing, unwitting
Ignoring everything I knew I felt
About how wrong this all was
Nothing here can ever be right
How can you live
How can you dream
With the flaming gates still burning bright
The only light in this timeless infinite night
Chorus:
Straight Outta Dry County
Tonight I ride free
No one's gotten out alive
But that's fine by me
My hands won't be tied
I'm getting out of here
Dead or alive
Some things mean more than life
I'll live free or die
The clock strikes nine
And I step outside
Feel the wind on my face
Why now do I feel so alive
When this may be
The last night I'll ever see
They won't let me go without a fight
I've just got myself, all alone
I'm gonna do this on my own
Darkness falls
Its time to go
Chorus:
Straight Outta Dry County
Tonight I ride free
No one's gotten out alive
But that's fine by me
My hands won't be tied
I'm getting out of here
Dead or alive
Some things mean more than life
I'll live free or die
Spoken: Do you know what it means to fear nothing? It means
you love nothing so much you'd miss it. That's what I'm
running to tonight. I'm running to love, and fear. And no
one is getting in my way. One way or another, tonight I'm
free. I WILL be free!!!
Start Over Now - Adrian - August 2004
You're livin' in a brave new world
Can't stop and look back
Gotta move forward
You have to live in the future
Not stuck in the past
Chorus:
Start Over Now
Don't you think its time?
This is your wake-up call
Its time to re-align
Realize this dream
Gotta find a way somehow
This is your wake-up call
Start Over...Now
You never run out of chances
There's always another day
Somehow you'll clear the slate
Find yourself a better way
Chorus:
Start Over Now
Don't you think its time?
This is your wake-up call
Its time to re-align
Realize this dream
Gotta find a way somehow
This is your wake-up call
Start Over...Now
You don't even have to know
You can just pretend
The past has never happened
And you can start again
Nothin' ever happened
You can start again...
Chorus:
Start Over Now
Don't you think its time?
This is your wake-up call
Its time to re-align
Realize this dream
Gotta find a way somehow
This is your wake-up call
Start Over...Now
Wake Me Up - Me and Adrian - I guess sometime in 2004
The last time, I thought it was over
That's it, and I was done
Back then I knew it was the end
But now the feeling's gone
Oh, and I've been numb so long
Didn't think I could ever feel like this again
Today is different
Now I feel so new
Didn't think anyone
Could make me feel the way I do
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
What happened to get us here today
Past is cloudy beyond right now
But for once my future is clear
I lived my life in the void
And now that you're here
I can see I've got nothing to fear
It all came unravelled
Now I feel so new
So wind the thread tightly
Give me my chance renewed
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
For all the times I lost my way
And all the times I thought I'd gone
The three hands must march on
And it's for you I'll always pray
To take me out of all that's wrong
Find a better place for us
A place where we belong.....
Show me how to feel again
Show me how to dream again
Show me how to love again
All my life is new
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up

Oh, and I've been numb so long
Didn't think I could ever feel like this again
Today is different
Now I feel so new
Didn't think anyone
Could make me feel the way I do
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
What happened to get us here today
Past is cloudy beyond right now
But for once my future is clear
I lived my life in the void
And now that you're here
I can see I've got nothing to fear
It all came unravelled
Now I feel so new
So wind the thread tightly
Give me my chance renewed
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up
For all the times I lost my way
And all the times I thought I'd gone
The three hands must march on
And it's for you I'll always pray
To take me out of all that's wrong
Find a better place for us
A place where we belong.....
Show me how to feel again
Show me how to dream again
Show me how to love again
All my life is new
Can you...
Chorus:
Wake Me Up
And open my eyes
Wake Me Up
Can you teach me how to fly
So I can leave this all behind
Wake Me Up
And show me how to feel alive
Can you Wake Me Up

DC - Hands Of Time
Another DC song, again this was mostly written by Adrian, I'm not sure which bits I contributed but I have a writing credit, so it must be something
Hands Of Time - Me and Adrian - Sometime in 2004
I'll always be here trying
To hold on to something to feel
But its been so long
That the memories are gone
Think I'm just trying to heal
I see you often
Always with somebody new
I wish I could be them
Yeah, I always did
But I'd deny it if you knew
Time flies but it cannot erase
Everything we've done
Some mistakes can't be unmade
But when I face down what I feel inside
I realize you're still the one
Chorus:
We made a mistake
Now its too late to replay
There's no way to rewind
We can't turn back
The Hands Of Time
Time changes everything
But it can't take this away
We're still the same
But this ain't about the names
Its about what we used to feel
The road we didn't take
The things we didn't say
It was just too d*mn easy
To turn and walk away
If we can see
Where we went wrong
Maybe we could turn around
But I know we're too far gone
Chorus:
We made a mistake
Now its too late to replay
There's no way to rewind
We can't turn back
The Hands Of Time
We can't turn back
The Hands Of Time
Staring down the past
I watched the future hit the floor
All the things I should've said
The ending we could have had
So unlike the one before
When you're reaching out
When you're all alone
Remember you and I
I'll take your hand
Reach through time
I'm reaching too
Let your hand find mine
Chorus:
We made a mistake
Now its too late to replay
There's no way to rewind
We can't turn back
The Hands Of Time
Chorus:
We made a mistake
Now its too late to replay
There's no way to rewind

DC - Back
Another DC song, this one I definetly remember writing bits for, although again the idea and main bulk of the writing was still Adrian's. If memory serves, I wrote the very first four line bit, and at least most of the two verses that start " For all the time that's passed you've cried " and " But nothing changed that I could see". The line " For all the time that's passed you've cried " was originally "Naked on the bed you lie", but Adrian wasn't keen on that so I changed it. Incidentally, I remember clearly that when I submitted the bits I wrote, Adrian commented that I'd outwritten Jim Steinman :D Which, y'know, is nice to hear :p
Back - Me and Adrian - Apparently November 2003
Back
One word
A million emotions
I can still remember the first time
Last time you said it I denied
Now I wish I hadn't lied
I ran away from you
But I came Back
That night
You thought you could speak for me
You told me I loved you
I laughed and said no
How could I see the truth
For all the time that's passed you've cried
I've seen your heart
From the inside
Its a nice place to visit
But to stay there
And lose being free
I knew it wasn't
For me
Thats what I thought
Chorus:
Last time you said it I denied
Now I wish I hadn't lied
But even though I never knew
I came back for you
But nothing changed
That I could see
You were still you
I was still me
Still just two halfs
Of a seperate whole
A one sided dance
Without a soul
Or thats the way
It seemed to me
Just a discarded memory
How could I know
That deep inside
My heart and love
Just couldn't hide?
After all
I came back for you
(Chorus x 6)
Last time you said it I denied
Now I wish I hadn't lied
I came back for you
Now that I'm here all alone
I'm discovering their lies
Like my broken heart will heal with time
I see you all the time
But the barrier is still there
A simple hello can make my day
I don't know if we could would we say more
Or if we wouldn't dare
I can't know what you're feeling now
Sadness regret
A little of both
Do you feel like me
Or are you feeling hope
We're both looking forward
To the day when we can be together
Its coming, but not real soon
It'll take some time
But they can't hold me back forever
Someday this could all be through
I've got all these memories
Things we've done
Things you said
For all we are right now
Whatever we were
May as well be dead
It all brings me around
To that night I threw it all away
I could've said yes
Just one word
Who knows where we'd be today
I think I'm makin' myself sick
Remembering how I lied
I stumbled on my words
They just couldn't come out
So I just go on the way I am
Can't even say I tried
This is kinda starting to hurt
I'm starting to doubt
How I ever could've thought of you
Don't know who I'm fighting for
What's real or all these memories of you
I don't even know if we can work
But this I promise you
(Chorus x 6)
Last time you said it I denied
Now its the truth and not a lie
I'm coming back for you
For all the people I've left behind
I won't let go this time
I'm coming back for you
